“Schools need practical tools to remove hidden barriers to learning” New national EDI certificate launches to strengthen inclusive practice
A new training partnership between the Inclusion and Equity Leadership Association (IELA) and the University of Derby has been launched to equip schools with the skills and confidence to support inclusivity within the classroom to ensure every child feels a sense of belonging.
Launching on Friday January 16, the accredited certificate course Identifying and Removing Barriers to Learning: Belonging, Equity and Inclusion will provide five in-depth study sessions for EDI and inclusion leads, SENCOs, pastoral teams and senior leaders.
“Teachers tell us they want real-world strategies that make an immediate difference,” said Gaelle Sullivan, Director of IELA.
“This course responds directly to that need, giving staff space to reflect, challenge assumptions and build the confidence to support every learner effectively. Belonging and equity are not add-ons; they’re essential to great teaching.”
Developed with senior lecturers at the University of Derby, the course explores belonging, wellbeing, school culture and values, alongside evidence-based modules on:
- History of SEND and Inclusion; Dyslexia
- Anxiety and maths anxiety
- Autism and attachment
- EAL and bilingualism
- Gender and LGBTQ+ inclusion.
Dr Alison Hardman, Subject Lead ITTE at the University of Derby, added:
“We are proud to contribute our academic expertise to a programme that bridges research and classroom practice. Schools are striving to meet increasingly complex needs, and this course gives educators both the knowledge and reflective space needed to lead meaningful, inclusive change.”
Designed for busy school staff, the five study days combine practical training, research-informed content and professional reflection tailored to each participant’s context.
