Course outline:
This webinar will cover the concept of masking, where people consciously or unconsciously hide aspects of their needs, often to fit in or avoid stigma. Commonly associated with neurodivergent learners, masking can have significant impacts on wellbeing, engagement, and mental health, and can make needs harder to identify. This session will support educators to better recognise the signs of masking, understand its underlying causes, and create environments where pupils feel safe to be themselves, reducing the need to mask in the first place.
Learning outcomes:
- Understand what masking is, why it occurs, and which pupils may be more likely to experience it
- Recognise signs that a pupil may be masking and the potential impact on learning and wellbeing
- Identify practical strategies to create inclusive environments that reduce pressure to mask and support authentic participation
