Course outline:
Cultural Competence: Moving from Awareness to Action
In our increasingly multicultural society, diversity brings richness in traditions, beliefs, and perspectives—but also presents challenges in navigating cultural understanding, communication, and respect. While celebrating diversity is essential, it must be done thoughtfully to avoid missteps such as cultural appropriation.
This interactive webinar explores the concept of cultural competence—what it means, why it matters, and how individuals and organisations can actively build and sustain it. Participants will gain insight into recognising cultural blind spots, engaging respectfully with difference, and appreciating cultures in a meaningful and informed way.
Training topics will include:
- Understanding cultural sensitivity and its role in everyday interactions
- Recognising and addressing cultural blindness
- Developing the skills and mindset needed for cultural competence
- Exploring the difference between cultural appreciation and appropriation
- Embracing the ongoing journey of cultural understanding and self-awareness
Learning outcomes:
By the end of the session, participants will:
- Gain a clear understanding of what cultural competence is and why it is essential
- Identify practical steps to develop and strengthen their cultural competence skills
- Learn how to engage with other cultures respectfully, avoiding tokenism and appropriation
- Reflect on their own cultural assumptions and begin or continue the journey of becoming more culturally aware and inclusive
