Course outline

This interactive session suggests a more nuanced and holistic understanding of pupil wellbeing. This session will explore how overlapping identities, such as race, disability, gender, and socio-economic background, shape students’ experiences of safety and inclusion. Moving beyond one-dimensional strategies, we’ll examine how schools can adopt integrated approaches that better recognise complexity, reduce blind spots in safeguarding practice, and create more equitable environments for all learners.

Learning Outcomes

• Understand the concept of intersectionality and its relevance to safeguarding and inclusion in schools
• Recognise how single-issue approaches can overlook risk factors and barriers for vulnerable pupils
• Identify practical strategies to embed more inclusive, intersectional approaches within safeguarding systems and school culture.

Gaelle Sullivan, Director of Research, Inclusion and IELA

Gaelle is Director of Research, Inclusion and IELA and joined the BSA in January 2023. She is an experienced senior leader and has worked in a range of state and independent schools. She is a qualified SENCO and holds a Masters Degree in Inclusive Education. Prior to joining the BSA, Gaelle was Deputy Head Pastoral, DSL and Head of Boarding at an all-girls independent school in the South-East.
